Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking pan
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Spoon or spatula for spreading

Ingredients

  • 1 28-ounce can apple pie filling
  • 1 15.25-ounce yellow cake mix
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 10 tablespoons salted butter thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup chopped pecans optional

Instructions

  • Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to get it nice and hot while you prepare the cake.
  • Open the can of apple pie filling and spread it evenly in a 9x13-inch baking pan. No need to grease the pan, the filling will do that for you.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the yellow cake mix, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Stir everything together to make sure the cinnamon is spread evenly throughout.
  • Evenly sprinkle the dry cake mix mixture over the apple pie filling. Don’t worry if it doesn’t completely cover every bit of apple, this will bake up beautifully.
  • Place the thinly sliced butter on top of the cake mix. It’s okay if some of the butter touches the apples directly, this will melt and make the top extra crunchy and golden brown.
  • If you’re using pecans, sprinkle them on top of the butter for a nice, crunchy finish. If you’re not a fan of nuts, feel free to skip this step.
  • Pop the pan in the oven and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly. You’ll know it’s ready when the cake has a crispy top and the apples are soft.
