Crinkle Cut Accordion Potatoes in the Air Fryer

Funny thing about this recipe for crinkle cut accordion potatoes: I knew what I wanted to make by sight. But I didn't know what they were called. Turns out accordion potatoes are also known as Hasselback potatoes. Some people call them crinkle cut waffle fries. Regardless of what you call them, by cooking them in the air fryer, they're done quickly and you end up with a salty, savory snack or side dish that is the epitome of comfort food.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Yukon gold potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1.5 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  • Peel the potatoes and rinse them under cold water. Then dab them dry using kitchen towels.
  • Slice the potatoes. You want them to be about a half inch thick.
  • Place the potato slices on your cutting board and thinly score them on one side. You don't want to fully cut the potatoes through. Then flip the potato slices over and score the other side diagonally. Alternately, you can use a crinkle cutter to make all of your knife cuts.
  • Cover the potatoes with olive oil and season with salt.
  • Put them in the air fryer basket in a single layer. You do not want them to overlap or they won't cook evenly.
  • Cook in the air fryer for 30-35 minutes on 350 F. Set a timer and, halfway through the cooking time, remove the air fryer basket, flip the potatoes over and then resume cooking until done. They should be golden brown when finished. Serve while hot.

Notes

If you don't feel confident handling a knife and slicing repeatedly to get the accordion look, here's an easy hack: invest in something that's literally called a crinkle cutter. You may also see it listed on Amazon as a wavy chopper or serrated slicer. This handy tool will do all of the hard work for you.
