With this recipe for easy Christmas morning French toast, you put all the ingredients in the slow cooker the night before aka Christmas Eve. Then, you let it simmer through the night. When you get up in the morning, it will be ready.
After the first time I made French toast in the slow cooker, I knew I needed to do some tweaking. On the first go around, the bread was too mushy for my daughters’ taste. So I modified it, mostly by using half of the liquid that the original recipe called for. Once I tweaked this really easy recipe, it was perfect.

Instructions for this Christmas morning breakfast
Coat the inside of your slow cooker with cooking spray. Since the French toast has the tendency to stick to the sides, grease it liberally. Then, slice the stick of butter and place the butter pats around the bottom of the crock.
Place the slices of bread in the slow cooker. If your slow cooker is on the smaller side and you’re hoping to use an entire loaf, you should pick a smaller loaf. Or, if you’re using a larger loaf, you may be able to fit only 3/4 of the loaf of bread inside. Normally, I can get 16 slices in my 8QT slow cooker crock.
In a bowl combine the eggs, milk, maple syrup and cinnamon.
Mix with a whisk.
Pour the liquid mixture over the bread. It should be enough to cover the loaf halfway.
Place the top on the crock. Then, turn the slow cooker on low for 10 hours or overnight.
Watching the French toast cook
I stayed up late to watch how this was cooking. About three hours in, I noticed that I still had some extra liquid in the bottom of the slow cooker. So I used a spatula and flipped the bread over — to avoid burning.
At this point, I took the top off and let it cook for the remaining time. This allowed the extra liquid to burn off. Note: If you have a slow cooker that you know tends to cook hot, if you will, then adjust your cooking time to eight hours. You may find that at 10 hours, things started to burn.
Verdict for this really easy overnight French Toast
While the French Toast was still a bit mushy when we ate it, we dusted it with powdered sugar. Powdered sugar fixes everything, because my daughters gave it a thumbs up. Also, they went back for seconds.
If I had to describe this Crock Pot French Toast, here’s what I would say. Have you ever had bread pudding? Yeah, this dish is a cross between softer French Toast and bread pudding.
Either way, my girls loved it. They didn’t even use maple syrup on it. Instead, they said it was like eating a gigantic cinnamon bun with a fork.
I put some cut bananas on mine and I did use maple syrup, because I love syrup. Just call me Buddy the Elf!
I love to serve French toast with maple syrup, naturally, but also topped with our favorite fruits. This could be the aformentioned sliced bananas, or chunks of apples or fresh blueberries or strawberries.
Speaking of blueberries, another option for a similar kind of dish is this blueberry French toast casserole.
