Ankarsrum Mixer Review
After our KitchenAid mixer died, we decided to splurge and get an Ankarsrum mixer. Specifically, the model 6230 standing mixer.
This was towards the end of the pandemic, after my husband had done a ton of baking. He was using the mixer to make dough for authentic New York bagels, bread, fast no-rise pizza dough and more.
He likes doing double batches of heavy dough. When he did that with our aging KitchenAid standing mixer, it would get really warm and begin to smell as if it was burning out. Also, it wasn’t mixing as well as it once had when making dough or anything else, for that matter.
So, it was time for a new mixer in our kitchen. We handed down the KitchenAid to our daughter (who planned to use it only occasionally), and my husband decided that the next one would be an Ankarsrum mixer.

Why did we settle on this brand? His focus is on bread and other doughs. So, he wanted something powerful. For this application, Ankarsarum has an incredible reputation.
Ankarsrum mixers are designed to handle heavy-duty mixing tasks but, when needed, can be used for a wide range of other applications including whipping cream and mixing batter. In fact, ask anyone who spends time cooking and baking, and they’ll tell you that Ankarsrum makes high-quality kitchen mixers that are known for their durability, versatility and unique design.
One of the unique features of Ankarsrum mixers is their design. Unlike most other mixers, the motor is located at the bottom of the mixer.
Instead of a moving dough hook like on the KitchenAid, the Ankarsrum mixer has a stationary hook. The bowl spins below, with an integrated scraper that stops the dough from sticking to the spinning bowl. This design allows for more efficient and more powerful mixing.
Ankarsrum mixers come with a range of attachments that can be used for different tasks, including a dough hook, a whisk and a beater for batters. Also, the mixer comes with a plastic top that allows the baker to cover and proof the dough right in the mixing bowl.Â
What it’s like working with the Ankarsrum
As mentioned earlier, the greatest advantage of the Ankarsrum is its design. The powerful motor combined with the spinning bowl allows for double batches of dough without worrying about the mixer holding up.
This design also makes adding ingredients while the mixer is running easier because there is no moving hook to avoid. Finally, the Ankarsrum’s multi-speed motor has a built-in timer, so you can walk away from the mixer without worrying that it will over knead your dough.
Ankarsrum mixer vs KitchenAid
There are a couple of notable differences between the Ankarsrum mixer and the KitchenAid one. As mentioned earlier, the bowl spins and the dough hook is stationary. With the latter, the dough hook spins to mix the ingredients.
Also, the warranties between the two brands are very different. Ankarsrum has a generous seven-year warranty. We’ve already had to use it, which I’ll explain shortly.
On the other hand, KitchenAid standing mixers have a one-year guarantee only. Also, I’ve heard anecdotally, while researching the pros and cons of the Ankarsrum, that KitchenAid mixers just don’t last like they used to.
Whereas a KitchenAid mixer purchased decades ago, like ours, would last, well decades, new ones do not. Again, this is anecdotal. But we heard it enough times to justify buying the Ankarsrum.
Price differences
Which brings us to perhaps the biggest difference between the two and it is the price. I mean, KitchenAid standing mixers are not cheap. When I look KitchenAid standing mixers on Amazon, for example, they are priced between $200 and $400. So, again, not cheap.
However, when you’re ready to buy an Ankarsrum, you’ll be spending much more. As of this writing, these mixers were for sale on Amazon for about $750.
Pretty colors
One of the things that attracted us to our KitchenAid mixer was the fact that we could get it in pretty colors. Since we’re Fiestaware fans, the more fun the color, the better.
While colors don’t make a great mixer, to be sure, sometimes aesthetics matter. So we were pleased to learn that we could get an Ankarsrum standing mixer in fun colors, too. Not as many at the KitchenAid but still some ones worth noting.
I’ve seen them in a mango color, tangerine, lemon and cobalt blue, among other colors. We just got the one in stainless steel. FYI, you don’t pay more for the fancy colors.
The Ankarsrum mixer appears in our gift guide for bakers and cooks.
Using the Ankarsrum warranty
I mentioned earlier that even though we’ve only had our Ankarsrum mixer for a short time, we’ve already had to use the warranty. That’s because when assembling the mixer, my husband managed to set up the base knob incorrectly. He’s not sure if he put it in at an angle or what but he ended up stripping its threads. You need this knob to adjust the tension in the dough hook.
So he emailed the company to find out if he could get a replacement knob. Remember: he bought this on Amazon, but like so many companies with lifetime warranties, you go back to the manufacturer itself for a warranty claim. That’s what happened with my Jansport backpack with a broken zipper.
Anyway, Ankarsrum replied quickly by email and asked him to send the serial number of the standing mixer. Why did they need that? Because the seven-year warranty covers new mixers only.
Since it’s possible to buy used mixers on Amazon, they want to ensure that this is a brand-new model and you are the first owner. Also, there are only certain seller accounts on Amazon that are approved to sell the brand. The serial number will tell them that you got it from a legitimate seller. Once he supplied the number, the replacement was in the mail. No questions asked.
Other things to know about the warranty:
- The Ankarsrum warranty only covers defects in materials or workmanship.
- It does not cover damage caused by misuse, accidents, or normal wear and tear.
- In the United States and Canada, Ankarsrum offers a 7-year warranty on all new mixers.
- In Europe, the warranty period is typically 2 years.
What else can you get with a Ankarsrum mixer
Like KitchenAid, Ankarsrum sells tons of different accessories that you can use with your standing mixer. Here are a few we’ve got in our Amazon shopping cart.
Meat grinder attachment
The meat grinder accessory attaches to the standing mixer, much like the meat grinder attachment we had for our KitchenAid. However, it looks like you turn the Ankarsrum mixer on its side when working with this accessory.
Pasta attachment
This Ankarsrum pasta attachment rolls and cuts pasta dough so you can make it from scratch. Again, we had a pasta attachment for the KitchenAid mixer, too.
Like those KitchenAid accessories, we’ll need to buy separate ones, depending on how we want to use it. One makes lasagna noodles, another makes spaghetti or linguine, etc.
Juicer attachment
The Ankarsrum juicer attachment sits right in the mixer bowl and lets you extract juice from fruits and vegetables.
Where to buy Ankarsrum products
We’ve already established that you can buy legit Ankarsrum mixers on Amazon. However, there are only a few sellers on Amazon who are approved to sell the brand.
Amazon sellers
So, if you do shop on Amazon, make sure you buy from these two approved Amazon sellers.
Pro tip: Don’t rely on “Brand” at the top of the Amazon listing. You’ll need to scroll down to “Compare with Similar Items” so you can see the seller’s names.
However, to make your shopping easier, I’ve linked here to each of those stores.
Other retailers
It’s important to note that not all retailers carry the full range of Ankarsrum mixer models and accessories. However, I’ve provided links to help you with your search.
Here are other retailers in the United States that sell the Ankarsrum brand.
