One of the reasons I love the concept of the dump cake is for its simplicity. You dump all of the ingredients into the pan you’ll use for baking, mix and pop in the oven. In this instance, I used a 9X13 Pyrex baking dish. Anyway, this cake recipe reminds me of putting together dump-and-run or set-it-and-forget-it Crock Pot dinner recipes.

With this Strawberry Cream Cheese Dump Cake, I’ve pared down the recipes so there are only six ingredients. With most you’ll just open a box — yellow cake mix— or a can — strawberry pie filling — or unwrap wrappers —a package of cream cheese and a stick of butter. The remaining two ingredients are an egg and sugar. Making a cake doesn’t get much easier than this.

Related to dump cakes and using boxed cake mix: another of my dump cake recipes is this one for banana bread using yellow cake mix.

I love how this recipe gives you the taste of sweet strawberries without having to worry about having fresh strawberries on hand. Also, you are sprinkling the dry cake mix on top of strawberry and cream cheese mixture without having to worry about using beaters or a mixer.

Strawberry Cheesecake Dump Cake Recipe Ingredients

  • 42 ounces strawberry pie filling, 2 cans of strawberry pie filling
  • 1 egg (not pictured here)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 8 ounces softened cream cheese
  • 15 1/4 ounces yellow cake mix 1 box
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • Garnish small amount of whipped cream, one strawberry sliced, mint leaves (not shown below)
Ingredients for a dessert are displayed: yellow cake mix, strawberry pie filling in a measuring cup, sugar in a bowl, packaged cream cheese, and a stick of butter.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F.
  2. Spread the strawberry filling on the bottom of your 13-inch baking dish.
  3. In a mixing bowl using an electric mixer or hand mixer, beat together cream cheese, egg and sugar until creamy.
  4. Pour into the strawberry layer.
  5. Cover the mixture with a layer of cake mix. Sprinkle rather than dump it so you have more even coverage.
  6. Top the cake mix layer with thin pats of butter, covering evenly.
  7. Bake for 45 minutes or until the top is golden. The melted butter will create this golden top.
  8. Remove from the oven and serve warm or place on a wire rack to cool and serve later. Put a dollop of whipped cream, plus fresh slices of strawberry and some mint leaves as a garnish on top of the dump cake. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. Or put in the fridge and serve cold later.
Three-step baking process: Step 1, cherry filling with cake mix. Step 2, topped with butter slices. Step 3, baked golden with a strawberry cream cheese topping and whipped cream delight.

Flavor Notes

This strawberry dump cake recipe calls for strawberry pie filling and is topped with a garnish of fresh strawberries. However, your options are only limited by the kinds of canned pie filling you can find in the store. You could easily modify this recipe for a different kind of easy dessert recipe and make variations using the following:

  • pumpkin puree
  • blueberry pie filling
  • apple pie filling
  • cherry pie filling
  • lemon fruit filling

I love the notion of adding fruit to cakes, like I did with this blueberry coffee cake, or even to savory casseroles like you can with this recipe for a pineapple cheese casserole.

This recipe calls for a box of yellow cake mix. However, you can easily substitute white cake mix if that’s all you have in the pantry. Additionally, if you want to make a very pink cake, then by all means using strawberry cake mix instead of yellow or white. Betty Crocker and Pillsbury both make a version of strawberry cake mix.

Storage

Be sure to store your leftover cake in an airtight container. I prefer to keep my baked cakes and any leftovers in the refrigerator because our kitchen gets warm in the afternoon sun. That means the counters are always warm and I worry that leaving a cake or anything else out on the counter might speed up how quickly it spoils.

Also, we have dogs who like to counter surf. So the refrigerator or freezer is always the safest place for storing any leftovers.
