Red White and Blue S’Mores Dip

This red, white and blue 4th of July s’mores dip recipe is designed to look like an American flag and used on a patriotic holiday. However, it is a kid-friendly dessert that you can bring out all year round when you want a fun, hands-on sweet.

What I love about this recipe for red, white and blue s’mores dip is that it is like a deconstructed campfire s’mores, no campfire needed. Much like the air fryer s’mores I learned to make, it allows you to enjoy s’mores anytime of the year, even if you never go camping. The melted chocolate and gooey marshmallows create a delicious dip perfect for dipping graham crackers in.

Obviously, a dessert with this color palate is perfect for bringing out on a patriotic holiday, much like my red, white and blue trifle dessert, topped with strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream. This year it can become your go-to, kid-friendly dessert for Memorial Day, July 4th or even Labor Day.

Truth is, by using different colored sanding sugar, you can make this dessert for any color-themed holiday. I used red and green sanding sugar on these cake mix cookies for Christmas. So I could easily transform this dessert into a red-and-green checkerbox s’mores dip in December. Use orange for Halloween or Thanksgiving or spring colors for an Easter dessert. The possibilities are endless.

Ingredients

  • 4 Hershey’s chocolate bars
  • 19 square shaped marshmallows
  • 1 cup water
  • Red, white, and blue sanding sugar
  • 10 Graham crackers

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 450 F.

In an 8×8 square baking dish, prepare the first layer of your dessert with the Hershey bar chocolate. Break the piece up and cover the bottom of the baking dish.

Dip 5 marshmallows in water and roll them in the blue sanding sugar. Place on parchment paper to dry. Repeat this process to make 6 red marshmallows and 8 white marshmallows.

After a few minutes of drying, place marshmallows on the chocolate in the dish to form a flag design.

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, watching very closely. You want the chocolate to melt but you do not want your marshmallows to burn. Check after 8 minutes and remove if it looks like the sugar is starting to singe.

Serve with graham crackers for dipping. Enjoy!

Notes

You can use any kind of chocolate bar you like. Hershey’s happens to be the ones most easily found in the supermarket and which break into little pieces, perfect for this recipe. However, you can use chocolate chips instead of chocolate bars if you prefer or if that’s what you have available to you.

You really want to use sanding sugar and not regular sprinkles in this recipe as the effect will not be quite the same. I found sanding sugar in the baking aisle at Target from the store brand called Favorite Day.

If you can’t find the square Jet-Puffed S’Mores marshmallows, you can take regular marshmallows, cut them in half and place the cut side down on the chocolate. The flat surface ensures that the marshmallows don’t move while baking. But even so, if you use more than the 19 marshmallows the recipe calls for, don’t cut them in half and really squish them in the baking dish after rolling in sanding sugar, they probably won’t go anywhere during the baking process.
