Avocado Fries in the Air Fryer

I’ve always enjoyed avocado as a side dish but making avocado fries in the air fryer is a next-level snack. You’re getting all of the healthy fat benefits of eating avocados and the sensation of eating something akin to fries without all that oil. These remind me of zucchini fries that you would order at restaurants.

We love making fresh guacamole with avocados. Or using them as a garnish when we make our steak and black bean chili. Recently, we experimented with turning avocado into a version of French fries using the air fryer.

We had a bowl full of avocados that were probably going to turn before we could use them all up. The previous night we’d use our air fryer to make dinner so it was still out on the counter. And then I got to thinking: what if I breaded the avocado with panko breadcrumbs — my favorite — and popped them into the air fryer? Turns out, it was a genius move.

Ingredients Overview

Ingredients for a recipe are arranged on a gray surface: soy milk, all-purpose flour, avocado halves, whole avocado, black pepper, salt, and panko breadcrumbs in small bowls.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Halve the avocados, remove the pits and peel. Slice each half into 8 wedges, depending on size, ensuring they’re thick enough to hold up during cooking.

Set up three separate bowls so you can have a dredging assembly line. Add flour to the first bowl. Pour the soy milk into another bowl. Combine the panko breadcrumbs with salt and pepper in a third bowl. Start by coating each avocado slice in the flour mixture, shaking off excess.

Dip next into the soy milk, ensuring full coverage.

Finally, coat thoroughly with the panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.

Place the breaded avocado slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket, avoiding overlap. Depending on the air fryer size, you may need to cook in batches. I have the Instant Pot Vortex Plus 6QT XL Air Fryer so I was able to fit my entire batch in the basket at once.

Cook at 400 F for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown and crispy, flipping halfway through the cooking time to ensure even crisping.

Enjoy the avocado fries immediately while hot and crispy, with your choice of dipping sauce. Most recently, we enjoyed these fries with pasta sauce. They’re also great with ketchup and, I’ll bet, ranch dressing, though we haven’t tried that yet.

Another unexpected fruit, vegetable, and produce to make in the air fryer are tomatoes. I never thought to cook them this way until I came across this recipe for air fryer tomatoes. It almost reminds me of fried green tomatoes, even though you’re using fresh, red summer tomatoes.

Notes

Make sure you don’t let your avocados get too ripe before making this recipe. The last time I made them, my avocados were perfect for making guacamole or mashing on top of toast. However, they were almost too soft to slice and, as I was going through the dredging process, a few started to fall apart.

When dredging the avocado slices, you can go through the three steps piece by piece instead of doing all the pieces at once.

Substitute soy milk for dairy milk? Now the recipe is vegan.

Substitute regular flour and regular panko breadcrumbs and use almond flour and gluten-free panko instead? Now the recipe is gluten free.

If you forget to flip the avocado slices halfway through cooking, don’t worry about it. I’ve forgotten and they’ve still turned out great on both sides.

Even though the recipe says salt to taste, I would go a little heavy handed on the salt. Maybe even add one-quarter or one-half teaspoon to the panko breadcrumbs mix. The first time I made these, I just did a few shakes of the salt shaker, to taste. Trust me: it didn’t taste salty enough.
