Peaches have played a role in our country’s pop culture, including online, on television and in sports. In addition, you’ll find peaches in drinks, dinners, art and sometimes songs. In time for August’s National Peach Day, here are 11 things you likely never knew about peaches.

Is Georgia Really the Peach State?

According to its license plates, yes, Georgia is the Peach State. However, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that California and South Carolina produced more peaches than Georgia in recent years.

The Bellini Hails from Venice, Italy

Giuseppe Cipriani is the creator of the peach Bellini. He invented this cocktail, made with peach juice and prosecco, at Harry’s Bar in Venice, Italy. These days, you can enjoy one in Venice at the Hotel Cipriani, named for him.

The Peach Bellini is Named for a Painter

People assume that the bartender that created the peach Bellini was named Bellini. Nope, the drink is named for the 15th-century Venetian painter Giovanni Bellini.

Peaches and Fuzzy Navel

The peach Bellini is hardly the only alcoholic drink with a peach flavor. There is peach schnapps, one of two ingredients in the Fuzzy Navel cocktail. The other ingredient is orange juice.

Ty Cobb, the Georgia Peach

One of the greatest players in baseball history was Ty Cobb. His nickname was The Georgia Peach. Though he hailed from Georgia, he spent most of his career playing for the Detroit Tigers in Michigan.

The 1992 Penny Marshall movie “A League of Their Own” featured the Rockford Peaches, based on a real team from Rockford, Illinois, that was part of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which ran from 1943 to 1954.
